The bitties have decided they are auditioning for a play. That is the only reasonable explanation I can come up with for all the high drama going on around here.
Know where I prefer my drama? ON THE TV.
This time of year nothing beats watching a movie. Before the girls were born, on these kind of dreary, cold days, I would come home from teaching and veg out on the couch until David got home and asked “woman, where’s my dinner?”
Juuuuust kidding.
It was on these days that I developed an affinity for what I refer to as a “quiet movie.” To be a quiet movie you have to have a few simple attributes:
- Cleanliness: defined as being able to watch with children once they graduate from childhood
- Sweetness with no border on outright cheesiness
- Big heartedness
- Re-watch-ability
{In case you haven’t guessed already: these movies are very hard to come by. Almost impossible, really. See point #1.}
But there are a few, and here are some of my top favorites, in no particular order.
Sweetland {2005}: A love that grows slowly between a mail order bride and her farmer husband-to-be. Totally charming.
Dan in Real Life {2007}: I can’t wait for the bitties to be big enough to watch this with us. If you haven’t seen it, don’t be a murderer of love: go watch post haste.
Bright Star {2009}: Based on the final years of poet John Keats and his love–my high school English teacher would be so proud. But the truth is I just supremely adore it.
Sabrina {1995}: I’m not a purist–just a sucker for a remake, and this is a good one.
Becoming Jane {2007}: If you’re a Jane Austen fan and never imagined her to have had her own star-crossed love…well, just shame on you.
This Time Around {2003}: Adorbs. Sure, it’s predictable, but what on here isn’t?
The Holiday {2006}: I watch this every Christmas. ‘Nuf said. Although I do feel the need to mention this one isn’t as squeaky clean as the other ones.
Now that I’ve made the list I realize that there are a few attributes that David would add concerning what makes a quiet movie, so before I hear it once he reads this post, I’ll just go ahead and add them:
- Lameness
- Sappy chick-ness
And yep, that’s just the way I like them.
If you have any favorite quiet movies, would you kindly post a comment? They are mighty hard to come by.
